Health communication: plain language for patients

A health text only does its job if the reader understands it. Leaflets, patient websites, campaigns and educational materials need short sentences, everyday words and explained technical terms.

I write, adapt and review these materials in European Portuguese, following plain-language and health literacy principles, without losing scientific accuracy.

What it covers

  • Educational materials and websites for patients and carers
  • Plain-language adaptation of technical texts
  • Readability review of informed consent forms and leaflets
  • Localisation of awareness campaigns and institutional communication

Frequently asked questions

What is plain language?
It is a way of writing that lets readers find, understand and use information on first reading. In health, it means short sentences, active voice, everyday words and technical terms explained when they are needed.
Can you simplify a text without changing the science?
Yes. Plain language changes the form, not the information. When a simplification could change the meaning, I flag it and suggest alternatives to the client or the medical team.
